I met up with XY at a gig we both happened to be going to. We hung out together
for a bit, and upon discovering how tired we both felt we decided on getting
some coffee into us before beginning the interview. When there was a break
between bands, and we felt warm and fuzzy and somewhat more awake, I began with
the questions.
Stella: So XY, how are you feeling right now?
XY: I feel brilliant. My cheeks hurt from smiling so much. And my
belly...that's about it.
Stella: Good to hear...I think. Now, you're relatively new, you haven't
played any shows or anything. Tell us about your ideas, what The Hot Black Love
is about?
XY: It's about Hot Black Love with a "the" at the front...
It's about learning your instruments real well.
Stella: Uh-huh. What type of noise are you interested in creating? For
example, would you like the music you create to make people's ears feel as if
they are imploding?
XY: Yeah, I wanna fuck with someone's equilibrium...I wanna have
one noise totally clash with the other until a person (the listener) falls on
the floor and starts doing a jig...

Stella: If I push this button, will you self destruct?
XY: Fuckin' push it and we'll find out!
Stella: Would you like to row, row, row your boat gently down the stream?
XY: Good question, Stella. (looks pensive)
Stella: Let's play word association! You know how that works, right? I
say 'cherry,' you say 'blossom'...
XY: Yep.
Stella: Okay, cool. The Hot:
XY: Black Love.
At this point in the interview, a breeze came into the room and the
door at the back slammed rather loudly. This made us both nearly shat ourselves
as it scared about 5 years out of our lives. Once recovered, word association
continued...
Stella: Sugar:
XY: Pot.
Stella: Elfs:
XY: Wait...Alf. Wasn't he that guy, the brown puppet guy with the
weird nose? Didn't he try to eat the cat? Oh, that's more than one word.
Stella: Hahahaha....Watsonia train station:
XY: My dad.
Stella: Purple:
XY: Bears exploding.
Stella: Samosas:
XY: (annoyed) SHUT UP!
Stella: Coffee:
XY: Bean.
Stella: Seventeen:
XY: (sadly) Fuck off.
Stella: Heine:
XY: ken.
Stella: Yes! I was hoping you'd say that. Rocket:
XY: ship
Stella: Bok choy:
XY: (shakes head) I have nothing to say to that.
Stella: Okay, that's all my words. I understand you play drums...Would
you describe yourself as a beat-filled powerhouse?
XY: I'd like to think of myself(pauses)...as an extremely amazing
musician who has sadly never overcome my laziness and is therefore fucking crap!
(happily) I like to play.
Stella: Fair enough...hmm. What do you think of that guy over there? He's
pretty cute, isn't he?
XY: (looks over to guy I'm pointing out) Yeah, you just wanna corrupt
the fuck out of him.
Stella: Mhmmm...
We both gaze at him for a few seconds
Tell us about the other half of the duo, XX.
XY: She's lovely. She has milky white skin, tastes like sunshine...
and she holds the band together.
Stella: Interesting. What exactly does sunshine taste like?
XY: It's like when you go outside in the morning, and the sun isn't
fully risen, but there's dew on the greass...it's kind of crisp, and you're
wearing light clothing, then sun hits you...it's good.
Stella: Wow...very in-depth. Sounds nice. Any words you would like to finish
with?
XY: Come and see us...we're really hot but we can't play
Stella: Alright then. Seeya XY, it's been fun.
XY: Goodbye. (looking a little dazed) Have a lovely day.
I felt it unecessary to alert her to the fact that it was night time. Maybe she
meant for me to have a lovely day tomorrow? Whatever the case, of you hear about
